Lauryn Kirk (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) leaves her brother Joel (John Reardon) with their family's garage in Indiana as she takes an audition at the Chicago School of Music and Dance. After being rejected during the audition, Lauryn goes to a diner and meets a waitress Dana (Tessa Thompson) who invites her to live with her. Dana takes Lauryn to a burlesque club called Ruby's the next night where she is introduced to Russ (Riley Smith), a disc jockey, and Brenda (Karen LeBlanc), the club owner. Lauryn is offered a job as the club's bookkeeper and soon a shot at her dreams of being a dancer.
