THE WOLVERINE filming this October according to Hugh Jackman.

Posted: 29 Jun 2011 05:10 PM PDT

Is THE WOLVERINE coming to theaters next year? Possibly, according to producer and star Hugh Jackman. "We shoot in October," says Jackman on the film which is being helmed by 3:10 To Yuma director James Mangold. "It will probably come out a year after. That's usually around the timeline."

20th Century Fox has yet to officially announce when we'll see Wolverine battling samurai in Japan.

First Class’ Darwin adapts to survive, right?

Posted: 25 Jun 2011 09:47 AM PDT

Darwin is a mutant with the ability of reactive evolution, meaning he should be able to survive any situation he's placed in. The film presented his "death" leaving many fans scratching their heads. But is he actually dead?

A natural-born leader and protector, Darwin was repeatedly shown trying to cover his fellow teammates from potential harm.

Darwin meets his fate when he devises a plan to keep Angel from leaving with Hellfire Club leader Sebastian Shaw. He instructs Havok to attack Shaw, not knowing that he can absorb energy and use it against any threats.

Darwin learned this the hard way after Shaw placed a ball of energy in his mouth. Darwin's body tried to evolve enough to protect himself from harm, turning into solid metal and then to a rock-like substance to contain the energy.

Unfortunately it could not be contained, and he "died."

But is Darwin actually dead or did he just convert into energy, waiting to reform his body? The character survived a similar fate in the comics, leading one to believe that his mutant ability has actually kept him alive.

Guess we'll have to wait and see if potential sequels follow-up on his story.

X-Men: First Class photos showcasing character visual effects.

Posted: 22 Jun 2011 06:14 PM PDT

Thanks to FX Guide we have some great X-MEN: FIRST CLASS images focusing on the visual effects work for the film by fx houses Rhythm & Hues, Cinesite, Luma Pictures, Digital Domain, MPC and Weta Digital. Below are some select quotes from the article.

We used reference from Enter the Dragon with Bruce Lee, in the mirror maze. That showed the imperfections and the hues and mutual density that we needed to add in. We reflected CG doubles into the mirrors themselves. They're fighting each other and there's breaking glass which was done with Maya and Houdini, and then composited in Nuke.

"We thought we might be just replacing [Beast's] mouth and a bit of the nose, but we quickly realized that to accommodate the dialogue we had to replace the whole thing. The eyebrows needed to move and the eyes were changing, and as he was wearing glasses, we had to match the nose movement."

When [Sebastian Shaw] absorbs nuclear energy from the submarine, you could see his face distorting and meta-morphisizing into this monster. You see him transform up close full screen and then turn back into a human photorealistic Kevin Bacon.

We went through a lot of development of trying to get a digital fire and smoke sim because he was more closely aligned with the devil. It wasn't a full-bodied flame but had to be very quick.

One of the problems we had was having all the facets on the surface that had a certain thickness and size, so it was hard to read the facial features, even if you added CG eyes. We distilled down what really made up her features – her eyes and lips and eyebrows and hair, and then went about building the model from scratch in 3D.

[Darwin is] trying to contain this energy from within so he's reactively swapping between all these different material properties. He goes from human to metal, which starts to heat up. And then he transitions into stone thinking that will contain it.

X-Men: First Class Box Office: Weekend 3

Posted: 19 Jun 2011 02:00 PM PDT

In its third weekend in theaters, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS brought in $11.5 million at the domestic box office, giving it a #4 placement on the charts. Warner Bros' GREEN LANTERN debuted with $52.7 million, coming behind First Class' $55.1 million debut total. While the film isn't performing as well as previous X-Men outings, it continues to receive positive word-of-mouth and continues to hold its own against other superhero films, which ALL have the added benefit of inflated 3D ticket costs.

So far the film has brought in $119.9 million domestically and $162 million internationally, giving the film a $282 worldwide haul. The film has already made back double its budget, listed at $140 million (after tax breaks).

Stay tuned later this week for box office updates, and keep your eyes locked on the box office tracker on the left sidebar for the latest numbers.

James Mangold in negotiations for The Wolverine.

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 09:29 PM PDT

According to Deadline, 20th Century Fox is looking towards "3:10 to Yuma" and "Walk the Line" director James Mangold to helm the Hugh Jackman-starring THE WOLVERINE. Mangold previously worked with Fox on "Knight and Day". The studio has furiously been on the search for a new director after Darren Aronofsky left the project. Formal negotiations with Mangold will soon take place, as the studio is hoping to get cameras rolling this Fall in the USA and Japan.

Written by Christopher McQuarrie, THE WOLVERINE follows Logan as he treks Japan on a top secret assignment and falls in love with a mysterious woman whose hand in marriage is already promised to another. When Logan chooses not to back down from his primal instincts he finds himself in-arms with her powerful crime lord father and samurai-wielding brothers.
